Routine is My Ritual

One of the sites where I hold my memoir workshop.
I've been very lax in my spiritual routine since my mother's illness and death. Something shifted in me and while I feel as aligned with my higher self than ever, I have found myself pushing my spiritual books and order aside. Until now. In tune with my inner voice and higher self, angels, and guides, I understand how much I need my routine and meditative time. It ignites and regulates my active passion and courage. So, since last weekend, I have begun again. I carried two of Deepak's books with me on the train to the Bronx and read them coming and going. I also have A Course in Miracles positioned on my coffee table and am rereading and redoing the workbook lessons. I am on lesson two. And just now with two hours left until I need to be in the ESL classroom, holding coffee in hand, I got the gentle nudge and listened that I must return to timed meditation.

I sat down in my blue chair, sighed and easily went into a meditative state. It felt so right. And what I received was this: everything will fall into place once I write the memoir about my relationship with my mother.

Just like that. All my handwringing over what to do first or with more emphasis: writing or workshops? Am I doing this right? Am I putting the cart before the horse? And on and on.

I am breathing with a feeling of outrageous calm. And the clock shows 10: 55, my birthdate.

Here's my routine:

Get showered, dressed for the day and have breakfast. Sit at the computer, notebook with a coffee and a pen and get to work. If the writing takes long and I find that I'm cutting it close to getting out to work or whatever, I can get out on time and not be late because of the great session I just had. This works for me.

Here are some other suggestions:

Take a notebook with you everywhere you go. My commute from Bed Stuy to Harlem to pick up my son is long. But with my notebook, the time flies.

Pick a topic when journaling. Why just write about the day, when you can tackle a topic you've been meaning to cover. Writing a memoir? Then have a list of memories you want to jot down, and do them until you've got an arsenal to chose from. That memoir won't write itself.

Read, but don't let it shut out writing time. Reading can be done as a treat, and only when some writing is done.

Blogging? Spice up your topic list. Don't just write about how it's so difficult to write. Keep it fresh. Find a topic in the news and comment about it. Write your observations. Aren't you in New York? I'm sure you could make Tuesdays your What I Saw on the Number 7 Train Day. You'd probably get quit a following. Or make Wednesdays, What I Ate for Dinner Day or make Friday essays about your cat. People love cats. You get the idea. Get to work. Cheering for you!

Also, I still want a writer's circle. I have another friend/colleague who is working on a book, so if you and she agree, that makes three of us. What do you say? She lives in Jersey City, maybe we could find a middle ground once a month, bring our current writing, drink tea, lovingly critique and get on with it! Let me know! I co-teach with her and will email her with the same request! We could start in December.

Yeah, I'm there. Jersey City is easy from here. Hop on the path from lower Manhattan and you're there.
